IRS has recently reviewed the unclaimed recovery rebate credit and found out that around one million taxpayers have not claimed the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. Hence, the agency has announced a special payment with a total fund of $2.4 billion to clear the unclaimed refundable credit.

The Recovery Rebate credit was initiated for people who have not claimed the Economic Impact payment/ stimulus checks, which was launched during the COVID-19 to support citizens dealing with financial stress and survive the economic crisis. The agency has announced that it will disburse this payment automatically to eligible taxpayers in 2025.

Taxpayers who think they will receive a stimulus check up to $1400 can check the payment status on their IRS online account through the following steps:

The US citizens who were eligible to receive the Economic Impact Payment can check their eligibility for the $1400 stimulus check based on the following eligibility conditions:

  • If you qualify for the 2021 Recovery Rebate credit but haven’t claimed the credit with the tax returns and filled the amount in the recovery rebate credit section to $0 will be entitled to receive the payment.
  • The Recovery Rebate Credit income limit on 2021 tax returns will be lowered if it exceeds the income limit, which is $112,500 for individuals/ heads of households, $150,000 for married couples filing jointly or widows or widowers, and $75,000 for other taxpayers.
  • The payment will be based on the 2021 tax information, hence the taxpayers must have a valid Social Security Number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and the US residents in the tax year.

When can you receive the IRS $1400 stimulus check?

According to the IRS announcement, the eligible taxpayers of Recovery Rebate Credit or EIP will receive the payment automatically if they have filed the 2021 tax return at that time but did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.

As per the announcement, the agency will disburse the payment from December 2024 when the IRS data shows they are qualified for the Recovery Rebate Credit, however, in some cases, due to complexity or other reasons, the payment can get late till January 2025.

Taxpayers will receive the stimulus check up to $1400 payment automatically through paper checks or direct deposit. The IRS will notify the eligible taxpayers through separate letters or notices when they will disburse the payment.

The stimulus check payment will be made to the account or mailing address recorded in your 2023 tax returns, hence if the bank account detail or mailing address is changed, you must report the changes to the agency to update them on the changes and receive the payment.

However, the agency has confirmed the payment will return to the IRS if the bank account is closed and the agency will reissue the payment to the taxpayer’s mailing address.

How is the 2025 IRS stimulus check calculated?

The maximum payment of the IRS special payment is $1400, so the payment will vary from one person to person. Taxpayers who qualify for the 2021 recovery rebate credit can calculate their stimulus check payment based on their EIP payments.

Taxpayers will receive the upcoming payment based on the EIP payment they qualify for at that time. US citizens can check their EIP payment through their online account or the letter they received from the IRS in 2022. The Recovery Rebate Credit letter 6475 or IRS 1444-C notice will have the 2021 Recovery Rebate credit payment you are entitled to based on the payment you have missed.

Taxpayers can also get the 2021 account transcript through Form 4506-T or call 800 908 9946. Taxpayers should know the maximum payment of the stimulus check is $1400, so it can be lower than the value.

What happens if you have not filed the 2021 tax returns?

Taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2021 tax returns will not automatically receive the special payments of up to $1400 in 2025 because the special payment is processed based on the 2021 tax information. So, taxpayers who think they are eligible to receive the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit should file the 2021 tax returns.

Taxpayers can file the tax returns for the prior four years, hence they can file the tax return for the 2021 tax year in the 2025 tax season. So, if you wish to receive the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit you must file the 2021 tax return before the tax deadline of 15 April 2025.

The IRS will process the special payment of up to $1400 under the unclaimed 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit till Jan 2025, so be ready to receive the unclaimed credit.
